Primers and I usually don’t get along. I have oily skin which combined with a silicone primer spells blocked pores. Some I’ve tried do such a good job its feels like I have a film of something on leaving my skin feeling like it can’t breath. Some work so well that very little shine gets through I don’t feel like myself. I try to keep hydrated as oily skin can be a sign of dehydrated skin, however I feel that wearing a mineral sunscreen I’m going to be shiny regardless.
I’ve learnt to work with oily skin, mostly applying BB cream then a dusting silicone free translucent powder. I’ve learnt to avoid silicones is unless I want clogged pores. In the summer however I feel like a giant shiny face. My current foundation colour stays, the shine is next level. In preparation for summer I started using Honest Beauty Matte Primer, a silicone free primer back in May. Read on for my Beauty Finds requirements or skip a paragraph for the review.
I have a few requirements when it comes to beauty products: cruelty free, natural, clean, vegan better. I do my best to avoid nasty ingredients such as SLSs, parabens, PEGs, silicones, etc. Petrochemicals are the sneakiest with so many derivatives and aliases. I also avoid palm oil and it’s derivatives as I prefer orangutans. Coconut oil marketed as the good oil I’m also cutting down on as it can be just a damaging crop as palm oil. If I do get products containing palm or coconut oil I try to get organic or sustainably sourced. With make up it’s a little harder so I go for cruelty free brands. I prefer products with less plastic and thankfully more brands are aware consumers don’t want unnecessary plastic (or governments are telling them less plastic). My skin type’s oily sensitive, acne prone and now wrinkles. I know nothing stops those lines, but if I can delay them then….
Honest Beauty Everything Matte Primer
A fan fave, Micronized Bamboo Powder infused primer that instantly mattifies and blurs imperfections. Made with Micronized Bamboo Powder. Works for all skin types.
First up the ingredients. I like most of them. It’s a little skincare mixed in with cosmetics. The colour of the primer is a white to faint yellow which disappears on application. The fragrance is a little playdoughy which too dissipates quickly. It can be used under foundation or on its own.
I find it works better on it’s own and gives my skin a healthy glow soothing out lines. I haven’t used it under my eye as I prefer to use Honest Beauty Calm & Nourish Rich Melting Balm then apply foundation. I know, I’m skiing for shine (those fine lines around my eyes are looking better though).
I don’t apply a pearl sized amount as directed and only really apply it to my T-zone, where I’m more prone to oily skin. I think it works better on its own as the foundation I use, Freshly Cosmetics Satin Skin Cream Foundation has a little bit of a glow in. So far these are the only 2 products I can find in Spain which are silicone free with a good price. I also don’t apply a pearl sized as it’s only 30ml with the tube feeling like it’s not all the way full when I first used it. I understand this is for transport, keeping the product safe. I feel if I used the recommend amount it would only last 2 months. I’ve been using it now for about 3 months and I think I have another 3 months to go. I paid around €29 I think on Douglas España and have found it cheaper on Niche Beauty for €25. I think it’s value for money by how long it’s lasting. The packaging has now changed although Europe is yet to receive the new packaging.
It hasn’t lessened the shine but as it isn’t a silicone primer the shine does come through. A lot less than sans primer. Do I need to use it? Probably no, but I like the reduced shine it does give, a light velvet glow. If you’re looking for a complete shine block, don’t use it. It’s not a full face primer. I sometimes reapply a little sunscreen on top when applying make up so this will affect the primer in action. In other words, sunscreen can give you a glow. It isn’t a greasy primer either and does blur fine lines and reduces the appearance of acne scars.
It thankfully hasn’t clogged my skin too much even on the days I crash and forget to remove make up. I’ve noticed that blackheads on my nose are less than when using a silicone primer or foundation, which is a huge issue for me with primers.
Any cons?

If you want a stop the shine primer this isn’t it.
Would I recommend? Yes! Worn on it’s own my skin has a nice velvet effect. Worn with foundation, I do have to use a little powder to be oil proof for a while. If you want a natural glow look with foundation this is it. If you want a complete matte primer this isn’t it.
