Recycle Less: Netflix and Linen

While this Recycle Less is about all things linen, it’s also a reminder to myself why I’m recycling less. Or trying too. As I’ve mentioned many times animals, nature are 2 things I care very deeply about. We as humans tend to discard nature by keeping up with the Joneses.

I started watching on Netflix, Broken. A documentary looking at the true price of things we buy. Not in any particular order and I did leave it by the wayside for Korean dramas. Just saying. The one that made an imprint was Makeup Mayhem. The episode focusing how people’s need to have the latest beauty products fuels counterfeit goods. What shocked me more was the amount of waste. Watching the legit independent beauty brand ColourPop’s production line I was amazed by the amount of plastic packaging for just one pot of eye shadow. This is just an independent label. It blew my mind how much say an established beauty house uses plastic, what’s sold, what’s not, what’s discarded. The the amount of plastic and transport involved in counterfeit goods. Even the amount of plastic at the Port of Los Angeles! 5.5 million containers go through that port every year. Imagine the plastic inside! I also started watching Deadly Dresser episode looking into fast furniture of the furniture industry such as Ikea. I only watched 3 minutes but seeing the trees cut down illegally from National Forests in Eastern Europe for is enough for me to say no more cheap furniture. Thankfully the Ikea products in the house are lasting (I also think this is down to assembly. Yes a nod to P!). I’ve read forest wardens are being killed in the last primeval forests of Easter Europe by illegal loggers. Ikea has been taken to court for purchasing illegal primeval forest land in Romania. I know people need furniture and not everybody can spend money on items that will last as they need something now. It’s a huge mess, it’s complicated and I don’t see a way out.

H&M Home Linen Cushion Covers

I’m not sure how to continue this post after that. Little steps can make big steps cooperatively. I guess I didn’t need to replace the cushion covers. They were about 4-5 years old and I wanted a change which I didn’t realise until out shopping. Excuses! In perhaps the worst place to recycle less I was in H&M Home. I came across a tan/light brown 100% linen cushion cover that said NAT over here! Long story short, linen is a great alternative to polyester or nylon cushion covers. Easy to recycle at the Continue reading “Recycle Less: Netflix and Linen”

Weekend Friday Favourites

Seeing as it’s now way past my bedtime, I’ll keep the intro short and sweet!

This week’s Weekend Friday Favourites, things that have been making me smile or caught my eye this week.

A few weeks ago in my local supermarket I picked up peat/compost whatever you call it to repot my plants and a lucky bamboo for no other reason than it looked nice! Continue reading “Weekend Friday Favourites”

Weekend Friday Favourites

I can’t believe in a week’s time Spartan Beast will be over! I’m more or less prepared. Last year I didn’t know what to expect. This year I do which is a good thing and equally not so a good thing.sportograf-72211332_lowres

Will I fluke again the balance walks over a mud pit? Continue reading “Weekend Friday Favourites”

Hello November!

I feel somewhat sorry for Mr D. Aj spent overnight at the vets for his biopsy and Diesel’s been home alone. We’ve never spent a night of just him and I.Mr D getting his vitamin D!I can tell he´s wondering what’s up as I’ve had a subdued little lamb, who’s taken dinner demands down a notch. He’s so used to having his brother around and even though for the most part they tolerate each other, I can tell he misses him. When he’s brothers back today, he’ll be even more confused, but will probably stay close by to him. I know he’s a social cat, I just never knew how much!

If I’ve been MIA recently blame it on my mac. It’s been playing up for a while, battery draining in 1 hour loading photos, doesn’t like doing 2 things at once, fickle with the internet. When P was here, he got it working faster which was great until I uploaded photos, then back to square 1. There was no guarantee adding extra ram bits and a new power lead would work. Then there was having to take in to add the ram if not prepared to do it yourself and they take their sweet time to repair things here. Long story short, I got a new mac! I can’t believe how much faster and smoother it is! The only minor issue, it’s a Spanish keyboard with all the punctuation keys in different places. I kept wondering why the apostrophe didn’t look right even with the language set to British English. Every time I struck it, spell check kicked in, it looked right, but didn’t. It took me a while to think to check out the keyboard properly. There it was, up with the numbers next to 0. Yay, but so awkward to type. Solution, set keyboard to British English and flitter between the 2 keyboards for all the punctuation keys.

Anyways, a quick recap of being MIA. Very exciting, weekends are back to groundhog, though Spectre’s out here next weekend and who doesn’t like a 007 movie?!

Shorter days still catching me out. Walk along la carretera de las Aguas, Parc Collerola with P Thursday. It’s popular even in darkness at 7pm with runners and cyclists. Carretera de las AguasCarretera de las Aguas

Back to working at pace running Friday. It’s a bit more difficult on the sand. Concrete is saved for longer runs! I stopped 1/2 way to explore the sea rocks and was surprised how clear the water was. I usually stop here and listen to the water lap the rocks. If I could have an outdoor office, sunny days here would be perfect!Crystal clear sea waterFriday run view

Zoo Friday afternoon. Shorter days catching me out! Last entry is at 5pm with grounds closing at 5.30pm. It’s more difficult to get there in time, but I have longer shopping time afterwards! Christmas never started arriving in the shops until the 2nd week of December when I moved here 10 years ago. This year, everything started arriving last week, toys, Christmas treats in the supermarkets, gift, secret Santa ideas and early sales in the shops. Zara Home’s filled with Christmas decorations, which is fatal. Zara Home’s always fatal with me anyway. Trips Friday and Saturday, opps. One thing I miss about British Christmases is just being about to browse all the decorations and gift ideas. I don’t have to purchases anything, just being around it all makes me happy! This year, it looks like I’ll be able to!Lemur, Barcelona Zoo

Zara Home. Walking around doing a Luther, hands in pockets so less likely to touch things’s futile! Zara Home Christmas 2015

Sunday, 16km up the coast. If possible I’d like to get the Spartan Race Trifecta next year: The Beast 21km+, Super 13km and Sprint 5km all plus obstacles. This year the Beast was more than 21km! I’m working up to 1/2 marathon distance, though if I were to run the Beast, it’ll take way longer than a 1/2 marathon time thanks to the 35+ obstacles and if I run here, mountains trails. I find long runs generally a bit boring which is why the Beast appeals to me. 16km went by kinda quick thanks to a head wind going and tail coming back (can’t say the same for pace!). My kind of windy run!Sunday 16km runSunday 16km run

Zoo again, as I wanted peace and quiet. Friday’s they have an after school kids club with most exploring the grounds with their parents afterwards. I usually go later, but as it’s closing earlier and it was a Friday, it was filled with excited kids. Sunday I though as it’s so windy and the shops open even though it’s holiday (normally shops are closed Sundays, but as Christmas is coming and 2 week day holidays coming up they’re were open) it would be empty. Happy November! Who’s your favourite 007? Daniel Craig’s mine with Sean Connery a close 2nd! Have a great week!

Weekend Friday Favourites

The beach is where I’ll be found this weekend soaking up vitamin D. Not all day, but I’ll definitly be dropping by for an hour or 2. I’m sure there’s Netflix marathon and without a doubt be listening to David Guetta play for free (advantages of living near an open air concert venue). I won’t get much sleep as the playa parties, so that’s my excuse for 4 hours of subtitles.

Nearly prime real estate beach spot.

This week’s been busy, classes rescheduled last minute, being told the right arch pain I’ve been experiencing running recently maybe the start of it collapsing. My lovely physio’s given me calf stretches to do with a pen under the arch, not letting the pen rise. My glutes are firing better as I’ve been a good girl doing my daily activation exercises for the past two months. I thought osteopaths worked magic. An osteopath and a physiotherapist in one really work magic.

It’s also been the week of some more mistaken nationality. Add Russian and Catalan to the already French, German, Italian, Spanish and Brazilian. I was asked for directions by some Russians who asked if I spoke Russian. Nope. Out with a drink with a friend, the waitress asked for her order in Spanish and mine in Catalan. I didn’t notice until she pointed it out, but the waitress spoke so fast, I was just making sure I got my order right not to be asked twice. I get conscious of my Spanish with non Spanish friends. Most English speaking Spanish get quiter. I’m the reverse (I think) and feel all eyes watching. As it is while I can understand Catalan a little more spoken now and more written, speaking it I’m just Bon dia, Adieu. That’s thanks to the ‘grandmas’ at the gym/club who are speaking to me more in Catalan. I understand it more, but reply in Spanish. For now they don’t mind!

Anyways, Weekend Friday Favourites. A round up of things making me smile the past 2 weeks as I missed last weeks.

Pink Watering CanPink Watering Can

Bargain at 87c from Alcampo! For ions I’ve been using an old sports bottle. More plants mean more trips back to the kitchen. Now I just 1 more trip back to refill. Gardening chic!

Maranta/Prayer Plant and Entrance Hall TableMaranta PlantZara Home Gold Leaf Bowl/Tray

I’ve been meaning to tidy the entrance table or get in dump keys, sunglasses table for a while. Browsing Zara Home’s sale I found a gold decorative leaf bowl/tray. I wasn’t sure if it would work as the table’s quite basic. Fortunately it did, but something was missing. In Alcampo, literally the next day, a Manata or prayer plant (called so as it’s leaves curl up at night) caught my eye. Again I wasn’t sure if it’ll work, but the 2 pull each other together. I swear cycling back with it, it started to perk and when I water it, its leaves dance.

Windscreen Wiper Stretch

I did this stretch a the end of Kathryn Budig’s Yogaglo Big Daddy Visvamitrasana class and have been hooked on it ever since if you can get hooked on a stretch. It feels oh so good and targets the IT band, quads and bum. Similar to a lying spinal twist, but with feet hips distance apart and twisting side to side, like windscreen/windshield wipers. The part that got me hooked, is placing the bottom foot flexed just above the top knee and holding a few seconds. After my runs, I can’t state how feely good it is! The only online source I could find is here, Flank.

Internet Favourites:

Buster The Cat Opens Door for Dogs. But he ain’t chivalrous.

Bamboo (the dog) Skates del Mar Dog Beach. You can tell he’s pro as he gets speed up like humans.

Bono The Surfer Dog. He and his human have their own Instagram account showing off Bono’s fearless surfing skills.

16 Things to Love About Squirrels. I didn’t know they zig zagged as get away or pretended to drop food.

Lucky Iron Fish. Such a great simple idea to help out countries that have high iron deficiney rates get iron into their diets.

Tone It Up and Lauren Conrad’s, 10 Ways to Workout For Free. Never underestimate a skipping/jump rope workout or stair workouts! The fun is endless!

What’s been making you smile this week? Have a fantastic weekend!
