DIY Vanilla Coconut Lip Scrub

I have 2 lip scrub recipes for you! While some may think lip scrubs are only for the winter when we notice our lips drying and flaking thanks the cold chapping them, I believe like all exfoliating it’s done all year round. I also believe always have a good lip balm near by even if you love lipstick. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For my girlfriends Christmas presents last year I was stuck what to get them and then out of nowhere the idea of lip scrubs stuck. They’re super easy to make, inexpensive, 100% edible and can be made with basic kitchen ingredients. Perhaps the most expensive part was buying mini jam jars for storage and yes all the jars, lids were oven sterilised, all utensils used flashed washed with boiling water, everything laid out on and dried with kitchen paper and of course I wore latex gloves. I made 2 types, a larger batch which can also be used as a body exfoliator (be careful with drains as it contains coconut oil which loves to clog drains) and a slightly different recipe for the prototype which I can’t find the link for. And yes, Chriselle Lim was the catalyst and her recipe’s used for the larger batch. All you need is:

Single Batch:

2 tsp brown or white sugar. I used organic raw cane sugar

1/2 tsp honey or agave nectar/syrup (I used honey as not a strict vegan. I eat honey!)

1 tsp olive oil or coconut oil

1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Directions: mix all ingredients together in a larger bowl to decent until paste like. I personally found using hands better than a spoon as it gives a more even texture. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Larger Batch (adapted from Chriselle Lim):

1/4 cup brown or white sugar. I used organic raw cane sugar

1 tbsp honey

1/4 cup coconut oil

1/2 tsp vanilla essence

Directions: Again mix all ingredients together and blend with a spoon or hands until even consistency.

Directions for use: apply and massage with fingers, wipe away excess with tissue and voila much less flakey lips. Store in the fridge and aim to use it within 2 weeks as it doesn’t contain any preservatives. I made mine back in November, it’s stored in my make up drawer, I use it daily and 3 months later it’s still fine, but aim to use it up quickly to avoid any nasties.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Who else thinks coconut oil’s a little miracle multi tasker? I already use it in toothpaste, as a eye make up remover, hair mask and in a deodorant mix. How do you deal with chapped lips?
