Parc de Barceloneta. Jan 2024

The old water tower of Parc de Barceloneta has been whispering my name for a while cycling back. Peeking above the trees and train tracks, curiosity got to me.

Nestled in-between Barceloneta and Hospital de Mar is Parc de Barceloneta. I’ve cycled past it so many times and only once before cycled through it. Open 24/7, one side’s open to the sea and the other by council run Club de Fúbol de Barceloneta/Club de Futbol La Catalana. For some reason I thought it would be run down as it doesn’t always look inviting cycling past along the beach side bike path. It’s actually a kinda cool park to cycle through.

The water tower’s a perfect example of Catalan architecture back in the 1800’s being that bit extra. The steel frame is what’s left of an old gasometer. Now a basketball court. The park even has its own permeant Punta Verde or recycling point for small electrical appliances and other goods that can’t be recycled in street containers. Most barrios have a specially equipped van that visits for a few hours on certain days.

The park was created in 1989 with the designers keeping the parts of the old gas station which was working up until the park was opened. The laminated steel gasometer structure was designed in 1968 by Claude Gil Serra.

I’m always fascinated where plants grow

Barcelona’s a city that’s forever changing buildings or restoring, refurbishing existing buildings. I think all the available buildable land’s (including all the flood plains) taken, yet new businesses and buildings are always popping up.

The water tower was built in 1905 designed by Josep Domènech i Estapà.

I would have never have given the Punta Verde (Green Point) a second look, if it wasn’t for the lights shining through the wooden frames, curious what it was.

The old Catalana de Gas management offices (1907) now Fàbric del Sol, Barcelona’s Sustainable Resources Centre.

There’s something about this view. Between train station and I, is a busy main road
