Oreos and Polar Bears

Advertisements

When cravings hit, nothing but what you’re craving will cut it. Those things called Oreos were calling my name today. I tried to calm it with dates but gave in. Yes, I’m a vegan who keeps it clean 99% of the time. I’m also human and that involves chocolate biscuit consumption.

Summer’s taking it’s time to warm up this year. It’s hot, but it doesn’t feel as hot as a few years back. It’s hot enough however that I welcomed the cooler temperature out running this morning. A slower pace than of late thanks to this cold I’m nursing. There’s always that feeling of disappointment when seeing a slower than normal pace. It’s my cold I told myself and having clear airways for the first in time a while was completely worth it.

While I’d like summer to warm up, polar bears would like it to cool down. I received an care2 daily newsletter earlier this week this amazing GoPro video, The Quest For Sea Ice, of polar bears searching for sea ice to spend the summer hunting on. Thanks to climate change, the sea ice is forming later each year and each year there’s less of it. It’s unimaginable to believe that by 2050, 2/3 of polar bears could be extinct.

It’s not too late to help save them or the environment for any future species (that includes us!) Here are just a few ways:

Keep the AC around 24C/75.2F in the summer. The heat produced to keep you cool goes straight up in the atmosphere. Any cooler produces more heat and can also aggravate skin problems and coughs. Switch it off when not at home.

Recycle! Recycling produces less demand on natural resources and it’s production. Less gases are released into the atmosphere.

Turn off appliances when not in use and avoid stand by. Plus you save on electricity bills.

Take public transport if you can or walk or cycle to work and get fit in the process.

You knew this one was coming: eat less meat and dairy. 36% of crops produced go towards raising livestock for meat consumption. It’s not just the methane from the cows heating up the planet. Land cleared to for cattle produces less oxygen and less plants to soak up the carbon dioxide. Then there’s the whole issue of fertiliser run off into water supplies and antibiotics up the food chain.

Can you imagine a North Pole without polar bears, arctic foxes and seals? Polar Bears International has more tips on helping those cute, white fluffy bears and general tips to help combat climate change.

It’s just a polar bear! It’s our future too!
