DIY All Natural Face Mask and Scrub

Today’s Earth Day and in the celebration, here are my current favourite all natural face mask and scrub.

Earth Day first started in 1970 to honour Earth, promote peace and environmental protection for our planet. All the ingredients can be found at home, reducing packaging and transport costs. So without further ado:

Honey and Lemon Face Mask

Honey is a skin saving miracle worker that has been used for thousand of years as a beauty product. It is basically something magical.

Full anti bacterial and anti inflammatory properties (vitamins B1, B2 and B3) which help combat acne, packed with antioxidants that help slow down ageing (zinc), rich in B6 to help keep skin moisturised and hydrated along with being a natural antiseptic (Vitamin C, hydrogen peroxide), it’s helped clear up my crazy adult acne skin. I’m ashamed to say my skin never grew out (apart from wrinkles fine lines) of it’s teenage years. I’ve tried many products and have had the most success with honey. It always comes back the simple, basic things.

Raw honey is the best and I’m currently using Manuka honey which has more antibacterial power than regular honey. This girl needs all the help she can get! In addition to honey, I add lemon juice, to help fade acne scars (though a Dermatologist is the only solution for mine. It’s something I have to live with thanks to some dark days). Packed with vitamin C and rich in alpha hydroxy acids it brightens and exfoliates skin, clearing up acne and uneven skin tone.

My current mask

2 teaspoons honey and 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice (no more. It’s an acid and can burn skin).

Leave on for 20-30 minutes

Gently wash off.

Can be used daily

What I don’t use I store covered in the fridge taking it out 15 minutes before applying to warm up. I’m normally found wearing it after my workout, fixing breakfast before showering.

Depending on your skin type, there are some great honey masks found here and here. I’m looking forward to experimenting with honey and cinnamon. I’ve tried a few with oatmeal, though they’re too much for my skin. The best bit about all these masks is that you can eat what you don’t use!

Coconut Oil and Sugar Face ScrubIMG_6301

This this a cheap quick fix exfoliator. You don’t even have to use coconut oil! Just add at a teaspoon of sugar to your cleanser or a few teaspoons to your body wash. The sugar granules are gently enough to exfoliate without being too abrasive. From experience, white sugar is less abrasive that brown sugar. In keeping with Earth Day, I use sugar sachets from cafes. I’m sure they’d only throw them away otherwise! Not in keeping with Earth Day, MacDonald’s 4g sachets are the best!

This scrub is great after a run to really cleanse and exfoliate. I use 1 teaspoon of coconut oil (It works fine also in the summer when the oil’s liquid) in a shot glass and mix in the sugar. Coconut oil is another miracle worker like honey for skin and hair! Just check out it’s other uses and this great coconut oil body sugar scrub.

I’ve been hearing a lot recently about apple cider vinegar as a toner. That I’m really curious to try! My bank balance will be also!
